Creating Japanese-style Bowls with Fabienne Withofs

350,00 â‚¬

Two days dedicated to creating Japanese-style bowls: the chawan, the traditional tea bowl used in ceremonies, and the yunomi, the everyday tea cup. The workshop offers participants the opportunity to explore the Kurinuki technique, a traditional Japanese method of hollowing and shaping a solid block of clay to create form. This approach, based on direct and spontaneous gesture, celebrates the material in its authenticity and the beauty of imperfection.
The course will be held in English.

ABOUT WITHOFS:
The artist works with clay as both material and metaphor, exploring the fragile bond between humans and animals. Her sculptures combine strength and vulnerability, irony and contemplation, inviting reflection on the shared human condition.

WHAT YOU LEARN
The workshop provides an immersion into Japanese ceramic tradition, focusing on creating two types of tea bowls: the chawan, used in traditional tea ceremonies, and the yunomi, for everyday use.
Participants will explore the Kurinuki technique, an ancestral method involving hollowing and shaping a solid block of clay to achieve the desired form. This approach emphasizes direct, spontaneous, and conscious gesture, allowing the material to be worked in its authenticity and celebrating imperfection-a core principle of Japanese aesthetic philosophy.
A unique experience to refine manual skills, understand the value of ceramic gesture, and create objects that carry harmony, balance, and everyday poetry.
